- There was a time long ago if you wanted to visit Hawaii you had to sail by a steam powered luxury liner. When jet airplane travel became popular cruise ship travel to Hawaii became a very distant second option. Today Hawaii cruise ship sailing is discovering a little bit of a rebirth. Another important point about Hawaii cruise is that you can choose between a full round-trip voyage from California, or just the inter-island. With the just the inter-island cruise option you fly to Hawaii then board the cruise ship there, then visit the four main islands by ship before flying home.
