Oahu Hawaii Car Rentals
- It is possible to spend your whole Oahu vacation on Waikiki and not have a rental car. You can take city buses to some close attractions like Pearl Harbor, and take charter buses to farther away attractions like the Polynesian Cultural Center (charter bus transportation is included with large group tours like PPC and Luaus). Small tours usually have Waikiki hotel shutle/van pickups. Also its a joy to walk around Waikiki and to the beach.
But if you truly want the freedom to explore all of Oahu on your own you have to have a rental car. A car rental allows you to drive from the South of Oahu (Honolulu Waikiki area) all the way to the North Shore (famous Banzai Pipeline) any time you want. A rental car on Oahu means is that you can say bye to big city Honolulu and see the natural wonders of Oahu your way, on your schedule.
Here I will list some Oahu rental car points which may very with individual Oahu rental car companies. Space in Waikiki is limited, which can mean having to pay an extra charge to the hotel your staying to use it's parking garage. The car rental counter at Honolulu International Airport (HNL) is the most convenient way to pick up/drop off your car rental, but there are also places near the hotels which can be cheaper. Weekly car rental is based on 5-7 consecutive days, and additional days are at the daily rate. Rental Vehicles are equipped with air conditioning and automatic transmissions. A credit card is a must. There is a minimum age to rent a car, for most it is 21, but some companies require 25. When reserving a rental car you will get an airport pickup unless an other pickup point is requested. Rates are based on 24-hour car rentals with unlimited mileage included. Most companies offer 1-4 hours free grace period before being charge with overtime. Hawaii has right hand traffic like everywhere in the United States, and Seat belt laws are strictly enforced.
